V9 - Inventory value report

Use case

The Inventory value report (Operations > Reports > Inventory > Inventory value) shows the value of the items that are in stock as of the end of the day on the selected date of the report.

This report is commonly used for reconciling asset values in SOS Inventory with those in QuickBooks Online. For additional information on how this report is used for that purpose, see Using the Inventory value report for reconciliation.

While the basics for running any report in SOS Inventory are covered in Reporting introduction and Running a report, the filters, options, and columns specific to the Inventory Value report are explained below.

Filters

As of date.

Locations. Totals only, the default, displays only the total quantity and total value for each item in the report, regardless of location. If All or individual locations are selected, the quantities and value for all items at each location will be shown in a grid by location. Multiple individual locations can also be selected. If you are running the report for reconciliation purposes, use the Totals only default. See the Notes section below for important information on how inventory value is impacted when the report is run by individual location.

Categories. Select All or individual categories. All is the default. Multiple categories can be selected. To use this filter, categories must be defined in SOS Inventory.

Vendor. Select one from the dropdown. The vendors listed are the preferred vendors from item definitions.

Item name contains. Type all or part of an item name to display matching items.

Options

Hide rows with all zeros. If you have items with no quantities and no value, check this option to prevent them from being displayed in the report.

Use standard costs. Values items according to their purchase cost, as listed in the item definition.

Include archived items. SOS Inventory does not include archived items in reports by default. Check this option if you want archived items to be included when you run the report.

Include deleted items. If you have any deleted items with quantity or value, checking this option will include those items in the report.

Show "as of" date. If checked, shows the at the top of the report, based on your As of date filter. The date appears when Display is selected under Retrieve your report. If the report is retrieved by Email or Download, the As of date will appear only if you print your spreadsheet. If a header is also entered for the report, the date will be displayed below the header.

Group by. A set of options that allows you to group data on the report. The options include None, Category, or Vendor. The default is None, which displays items in alphabetical order. If your Group by option is set to Category, any item that has not been assigned to a category will be included in the first grouping displayed on the report, under the heading <no category>. The same principle applies when the Group by option is set to Vendor. Items with no preferred vendor defined will be listed first on the report, under the heading <no vendor>.

Header. Enter header text for the report, if desired. The header appears when Display is selected under Retrieve your report. If the report is retrieved by Email or Download, the header will appear only if you print your spreadsheet.

Footer. Enter footer text for the report, if desired. The footer appears when Display is selected under Retrieve your report. If the report is retrieved by Email or Download, the footer will appear only if you print your spreadsheet, above the system-generated text, Report Generated [date] [timestamp].

Columns

The default columns for the Inventory value report are the item Name and Description. A name links to the item record on the Items list.

Fifteen additional SOS columns are available, as well as any custom fields you have defined for items.

Sample Inventory value report

A sample Inventory value report is displayed below for the Georgetown Warehouse and Main Warehouse locations as of 6/9/2026. The first item listed, 1 in x 1 in Steel Tube - Support braces, shows quantities of 8 at Georgetown and 87 at Main, with a Total (Qty) at these locations of 95. The item's value at Georgetown is 14.8 and 160.95 at Main, for a Total (Value) of 175.75.

Notes

If you use FIFO as your valuation method and have multiple locations, you may see some unexpected numbers on the Inventory value report when it is filtered to run by individual location rather than All. The variation in pricing and the valuation method makes the value by location sometimes seem flawed. While the overall valuation is correct, the value distribution per location may not reflect the actual inventory value at time of its receipt.

tips_and_updatesEXAMPLE: Joe's Hardware uses FIFO as its company's valuation method and has multiple locations defined. Location A received a shipment of 20 hammers for a purchase cost of $7 each. The following day, Location B received 15 hammers, costing $8 each. A few days later, a customer ordered a hammer from Location B, bringing that location's quantity down to 14. The hammer shipped to the customer was at a value of $7 because of FIFO rules.

Because Joe's Hardware uses FIFO, the value of the hammer shipped from Location B was deducted from Location A, causing the valuation at each location to not reflect the cost you paid originally.

To fix this problem, enable the Always Use Average Costs for Cost by Location setting (Tools & settings > ConfigurationInventory > General). This setting allows you to view the value of the quantity at each location while still using FIFO accounting overall.  The formula used to calculate the inventory value at a location:

Inventory value = Average value per item (Total cost basis divided by total quantity, multiplied by location quantity)
