V9 - Settings for serial inventory
With SOS Inventory's serial inventory settings, you can:
- Automate serial numbers
- Use serial numbers to track and preserve the value of individual serial units
- Designate serial units on pick tickets
- Include warranty information for shipped serial units on packing slips
These settings are explained in the sections below.
Automating serial numbers
Automated serial numbers are most commonly used in manufacturing to assign serial numbers to output items on build and process transactions. SOS Inventory's General inventory settings are where you can enable automatic serial (as well as lot) numbering and set your numbering preferences.
To set up automated numbering:
- Go to the General inventory settings page (Tools & settings > Configuration > Inventory > General).
- Move the Serial/lot numbering slider to Automatic to open the options available for automatic numbers.
- Use the slider to set the numbering as Sequential or Random.
- Enter your desired number of characters in the Serial/lot number length field. Choose a number between 8 and 32 digits.
- Optional: Add a Prefix to automated numbers and if using sequential numbers, enter the Next number you want to be used.
- Save the page when finished.
Setting the value of serial units
Under the General inventory settings (Tools & settings > Configuration > Inventory > General), you have the option to enable Value serials by specific ID. This setting keeps the value of each serial unit the same as it was when brought into the system, regardless of the valuation method.
This value can be modified in a manufacturing transaction.
Designating serial units on pick tickets
If you use pick tickets, you have the option of enabling Serials/lots on pick tickets (Tools & settings > Configuration > Fulfillment > Pick tickets) to specify the serial numbers of the units picked.
Including warranty information for serial units on packing slips
To use a warranty for a serial item, the warranty must be defined in SOS, as well as assigned to the item in its definition. Enabling Show warranty on serial units (Tools & settings > Configuration > Fulfillment > Shipments) allows warranty information to be included on packing slips when serial items are shipped to customers.
The warranty goes into effect on the date the item is shipped.
See Warranties for more information about creating and using warranties.
