V9 - Using Location settings

In an item's definition, you can set its default bin, reorder point, and maximum stock level. But if your item is stored at multiple locations—each of which could have a different reorder point, maximum stock level, or default bin—Location settings allows you to set each of these for an item at each location. To access this feature, go to Operations > InventoryItems, then select Location settings on the item's Actions menu. (Refer to Item field descriptions for explanations of the Reorder pointMax stock, and Default bin fields, if needed).

Here is the layout of a Locations settings table for a sample item called Blue ink cartridge:

Using Location settings for reorder points and max stock levels

If you enter a reorder point and max stock level in the item definition only, the same values in the item definition will be applied to all locations. However, if you set those values in Location settings, they will override the item definition—but only for those locations where values have been entered. If a location doesn't have its own values established in Location settings, the system will refer to the item definition.

If you are managing reorder points and max stock levels by location, we recommend that you clear the values from the item definition and use Location settings exclusively. However, if you want to set specific values for just a few locations but use the same reorder point and max stock level values for the rest, leave the item definition values in place as the default.

You can use an item bulk edit to populate the reorder points and max stock levels on the Location settings table. However, you must perform a separate bulk edit for each location. Be sure to specify which location you want to export and to select that same location when importing your edited file.

Using Location settings with bin-tracked items

edit_noteNOTE: Location settings allows you to assign an item to bins at multiple locations, but bin tracking must be enabled at each location where you intend to track the item. In addition, each location must have an existing bin to which you can assign the item. If these conditions have not been met, SOS will not allow you to use Location settings to enter a default bin for the item at that location.
infoTIP: Bin-tracked locations can be identified by the down arrow appearing in the Default bin column. If a down arrow is present, but no bins appear, bins have not been created.

If the Default bin field on the Location settings table is left blank for a bin-tracked location, SOS will use the default bin listed in the item definition. The default bin has no relevance for non-tracked locations.

Refer to Bins for more details on establishing bin-tracked locations and creating bins.
