V9 - Creating a bill of materials (BOM)

A bill of materials (BOM) is the specification of the number and type of components that are used in building an assembly. The BOM specifies the quantity required for each component to make one unit of the finished good.

To create a BOM:

  1. Go to Operations > Inventory > Items and find the assembly item record.
  2. On the Actions dropdown, choose Bill of materials.
  3. On the bill of materials page for the assembly item, enter each component item and the quantity needed to build one assembly item. Include notes if needed. Labor items and fees should be included in the BOM, as applicable.

warningIMPORTANT: Units of measure are not currently enabled for BOMs. All quantities should be entered in the base unit only.

Bill of materials (BOM) field descriptions

Add lines (add_circle). Click the icon to add additional lines to the line item table. The number of lines added is established by the number specified by your company in the Default lines setting (Tools & settings > Configuration > Company > General).

Clear lines. Adeleteicon in the column header of a table or line-item area clears the content of all line-items in a table, but not the lines themselves. By contrast, adeleteicon in a single line-item row removes both a line and its contents.

Cost each. The current purchase cost for that line item.

Description. Defaults to the purchase description for the item.

Item. The name of the line item.

Quantity. The item quantity needed to build one unit of the assembly.

Multitool. A multifunctional icon in the far-left column of a line item. The Multitool is a convenient feature found on transaction line items and some other tables used in SOS Inventory. The Insert tool (arrow_forward), located in the top left corner of the Multitool, inserts a blank line above the current line item. The Move tool moves and reorders line items by clicking, holding, and dragging thedrag_indicatoricon. The Copy tool (arrow_drop_down_circle) duplicates the data in one line item to the line immediately below it.

infoTIP: If another line item is directly below the one you intend to copy, use the Insert tool to add a blank line before copying. This protects the existing line item that is below from being overwritten.

Notes. Optional production notes pertaining to this item.

Total. The total value of a line, as calculated by the Quantity and Cost each.
