V9 - Waste items and yield percentage

For any output of a process, you can specify the output item as waste.

Based on the percentage of waste items and non-waste items, the system will calculate a yield for your process. Yield implies the overall amount of raw materials and services that are actually incorporated into the non-waste output items. This helps you to evaluate materials from different suppliers, for example, to determine which gives you the best outputs in your manufacturing. Waste items go into inventory like any other inventory item, so that they can be tracked and either reused later or discarded, as needed.

On the Process templates list, the Expected yield column displays the anticipated yield percentage of any process. The actual yield of a process can be viewed in the Yield column of the Process transactions list.

edit_noteNOTE: SOS Inventory uses the following formula to calculate yield:
Yield = 1 - (Waste quantity/Total input quantity)

Defining waste items

You can easily define waste items by using the following steps:

  1. Go to the Items list (Operations > Inventory > Items) and find the item that you want to track for waste.
  2. Make a copy of the item by clicking Copy this item under the Actions menu. This will display the pop-up window for the item edit page.
  3. Update the name to remove (Copy) and add a dash followed by Waste at the end of the item name. This is a recommendation for the name, but you can change it to whatever is meaningful to you. This keeps waste product from getting returned to the original inventory item. A separate waste item also makes searching and accounting for the waste via an inventory adjustment easy.
  4. If needed, modify the asset account, purchase cost, and any other data.
  5. Save.

Removing waste after manufacturing

When you discard waste product, use an adjustment transaction to remove the waste item quantities from SOS Inventory. If you used Waste in the name of the item, it is very easy to select the item when adding it to the adjustment. You simply set both the quantity and value of the item to zero.

Another method that can be used to adjust waste out is to use the bulk edit item process:

  1. Go to Tools & settings > Export data.
  2. Select Items under the Inventory section.
  3. In the Filters section of the Item export page, add the word waste to the Item name contains option.
  4. In the Options section, check the box Hide rows with all zeros.
  5. In the Columns section, click Add all columns required for import.
  6. Under Retrieve your report, click Download
  7. Edit this spreadsheet, removing all items that are not Inventory item or Assembly types.
  8. For the remaining items, set QuantityOnHand and ValueOnHand to zero.
  9. Save the file.
  10. Go to Tools & settings > Import data.
  11. Use the File selector to upload your edited spreadsheet.

This will create a bulk edit adjustment that zeroes out all waste.
